Rated current standard for terminal blocks of rural lighting ready boards in Africa

Based on the international low-voltage distribution standards, the working conditions of rural power grids in Africa, and the characteristics of civil lighting loads, the rated current of the internal terminal block of rural lighting ready boards in Africa should not be less than 16A, which is the universal minimum selection standard and can be adapted to the majority of village household lighting and small household appliance distribution scenarios. This selection is based on the IEC low-voltage electrical standards and the general guidelines for rural distribution engineering, taking into account special working conditions such as local voltage fluctuations, high temperature environments, and line overload risks.

The rural power distribution facilities in Africa are relatively simple, with poor power supply stability, high environmental temperatures, and terminal blocks that are subjected to high temperatures and voltage fluctuations for a long time, requiring sufficient current carrying capacity to be reserved. The industry standard selection principle is that the rated current of the terminal block should be ≥ 1.5 times the maximum working current of the circuit. The working current of the conventional circuit for rural single household lighting is about 10A, and the 16A terminal block can fully cover the conventional load, eliminating faults such as heating, erosion, and poor contact caused by long-term full load operation.

If the Ready Board Box is used for centralized lighting distribution in multiple households and comes with small socket loads, it needs to be upgraded and selected with terminal blocks of 20A or above uniformly. At the same time, the terminal block needs to be matched with copper core wires of 2.5mm ² or more, made of flame-retardant and heat-resistant materials, suitable for the harsh operating environment of outdoor simple ready boards, ensuring the long-term safe and stable operation of the distribution system, and complying with the safety construction and operation standards of low-voltage lighting projects in African rural areas.
